Competitions Rules
Rules 2025
All Club Competitions will be played under the current Laws of the Sport of Bowls except as stated below.
All arrangements for Club competitions (including any rule exceptions and the dates for each round) are the responsibility of the Management Committee and are applied by the Competition Secretary.
Each entrant will be provided with a copy of rules. In addition, the rules are displayed in the pavilion and on the Club’s website.
Dress Code: Club colours for all matches
1. If fewer than 8 players enter any competition, a Round-Robin format will be applied, every entrant thus playing each of the other competitors in turn. Each game in the round- robin shall be as defined for that competition. Two points will be awarded for a win; one point each for a draw. The winner shall be the individual/team with the highest number of points. If points are equal then the greatest shot difference shall decide. If there is still a tie then the greatest number of ends won will decide. Where the aforementioned does not produce a winner a play-off shall decide.
2. Draw sheets for each competition, showing the dates for each round, are displayed on the Pavilion notice boards and also on the Club website. Each round must be played on or before the ‘play-by-date’ except as provided for in (10) below.
3. The player or team first named in any draw is the Challenger, and is responsible for ALL the match arrangements including booking a rink and arranging a marker if required.
4. The Challenger must, at least 14 days before the 'play-by-date' of the opening round of any competition, and thereafter within 7 days following the closing date of the previous round, offer the Opponent the choice of 3 dates, one of which must be a Saturday or Sunday and one a weekday.
5. If, on any of these dates, the opponent has already arranged to play another recognised competition or County match, then the Challenger shall, if requested, offer an alternative date.
6. The Opponent must, within 3 days of receipt of the challenge accept one of the dates offered.
7. If the Opponent has not been contacted by the Challenger as required in (3) above, the Opponent has the option to adopt the role of Challenger and proceed by promptly offering a choice of dates to his/her Opponent, as in (4) above. The Opponent must respond as in (6) above.
8.It is expected that both parties will make every effort to agree a date in the spirit of true sportsmanship.
9. If dates cannot be agreed, either party may refer the matter to the Competition Secretary. In the absence of any referral, the Challenger, as determined by these rules, will be entitled to receive a walkover.
10. Extension of the 'play-by-dates' will only be allowed in exceptional circumstances,e. for reasons beyond the players’ control, and at the discretion of the Competition Secretary, or in his/her absence, the Management Committee. Any extension granted shall not exceed 5 days.
11. Where matches are unfinished due to climate conditions or outside interference the following shall apply:
(a) Should 5 or less ends be completed, the match shall be replayed.
(b) Should more than 5 ends be completed but less than 12, the match shall continue from that stage and on the same green.
(c) Should 12 or more ends be completed, the result stands.
12. Weekday matches are assumed to commence at 6.00 pm. but can be scheduled for morning or afternoon playing sessions by mutual agreement.
13. From time to time the Meteorological Office issues weather warnings. Games should not be played when a red warning is in place.
14. Matches shall not span 2 playing sessions without prior approval of the Green & Property Section Representative or his/her nominee.
15. Any queries regarding whether the green may be played on are referred to the Greenkeeper.
16. Failure to arrive within 30 minutes after the agreed start of the match will result in the offender conceding a walkover.
17. In all competitions 2 trial ends are permitted.
18. Substitutes are permitted at the discretion of the Competition Secretary. Any substitute should be of an equal handicap to the person they are replacing.
